Primarily for general aviation discussion, but other aviation topics are also welcome.

That is really interesting. We have a cellphone transmitter on an HT mast about half a mile from home. I watched with interest when they upgraded the equipment to 5G in the expectation of improving our GSM internet speeds

Coincidently, our Audi has been experiencing all kinds of issues with MMI functionality but generally only when sat on the drive at home. (Not that it has gone far in the past two years) I had not related the two topics but the start of the Audi issues certainly fits with the 5G activation locally.

There's a really good story - possibly apocryphal - told by a Telecoms engineer.

With every new generation of mobile technology, they'd install the equipment and then receive lots of complaints about the effects of the the new technology. Headaches, illnesses, interference - all sorts of things. So they'd have a meeting with the locals, and point out that though the equipment was installed, it hadn't actually been turned on yet.

At which point the complaints would go away. Until the next generation of mobile technology was installed.

[We had mobile transmitters installed in the church tower opposite my house a couple of years ago. The biggest (anonymous) complaint against them was that they'd facilitate 'downloading porn'].

Continuing the thread drift. I have a one year old VAG group car, albeit towards the cheaper end of the spectrum than an Audi. Almost from day one I had issues with spurious warnings about having to take the car to a workshop because of a fault with the emergency SOS call system and the satnav “drifting”. On one occasion, upon arriving home, the satnav showed my position as 20 odd miles away. A little research on the internet shows this problem is not uncommon.

In my case, after various software updates failed to resolve the issue, the dealer agreed to replace my car with a new one of the exact same specification (although hopefully minus the fault) on a “key for key” basis. That vehicle is on factory order at present with no ETA, not that I am too bothered by the delay. In fact, the longer the replacement car takes to arrive, the more favourable this is to me.

One final point. It took a little effort to persuade the dealer that the above was an appropriate resolution in my case, requiring a couple of lengthy telephone calls and some “to the point” correspondence from me, but the dealer did the decent (and correct) thing in the end. However, the manufacturer was simply appalling in its approach and attitude.

I can vouch for this sort of thing from firsthand experience.

Installing a new telecoms network a few years ago with a new base station on the roof of a residential block of flats. The equipment was live and transmitting, but not actually being used by anyone as the network was still being rolled out.
Complaints came from an occupant of issues with TV reception so we arranged to meet them along with Ofcom a few days later. They confirmed the problem was still present, especially the previous evening. Our equipment transmits the same 24/7 so there would be no variation during the day. Additionally we had turned it off 2 days previous in response to the complaint. Therefore Ofcom informed the resident that it was nothing to do with our equipment. Best guess was a taxi firm that only operated in the evenings.
