Having sat for many years on the BSi TC97 committee I saw this type of fatigue firsthand.

However, at least ASTM seem to be able to recruit members which was a big problem in the UK.

My experience of so-called consensus standards is that they include individual's hobby horses pushed through with little resistance. A few years later, it becomes impossible to get any guidance on a seemingly illogical requirement.

My experience of so-called consensus standards is that they include individual's hobby horses pushed through with little resistance. A few years later, it becomes impossible to get any guidance on a seemingly illogical requirement.

Or a manufacturer gets on board with the explicit purpose of ensuring that the regulations best favour their products, instead of favouring best safety. (Not that FAR and CS standards are totally immune to that, but the processes are pretty robust at guarding against it.)
