it would greatly surprise me. Why should Google, who will probably have more storage and data processing and global communications capacity than any mere Government Agency, bother ? They can do what they do directly, with users' implicit and legally arguable permission, without any need to apply for any pesky Warrants .. :)

You have heard of Echelon and Raptor I presume?

I gathered during a very interesting talk from a pertinently specialist US lawyer that FISA is the current relevant US Federal Law, with appropriate Court and Congressional Committee oversights:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_I ... llance_Act

[since 'Echelon' first emerged as a reported project name >40 years ago, in the TELEX era, I doubt it has any relevance today. Both technology and the law and oversight mechanisms will have moved on]

Obviously, other Forumites may know differently, but may not be at liberty to share :) Anyway, my point was that these are constraints which need not bother the social media companies, since, supposedly, they process and analyse only material which individuals have consented to provide

Raptor replaced it, I dont know if Raptor has been replaced, I think you missed my initial point or just chose to steer away from it

Confirmation bias I reckon.

A growing number of people keep suggesting the idea that google and Facebook are listening to them. It’s all logic based; we aren’t as unique as we think.

The gypsy woman says a bunch of searching broad comments and your brain ignores the ones that don’t match but when you hear something vaguely matching your life you latch on... wow.... she really can see spirits! Same here, you see hundreds of adverts but one that spooks us stick.

If they were listening imagine the scandal! It would rock the world. Apple, Microsoft and google would be busted for allowing an app to listen without authorisation, Facebook and google would be busted for privacy, etc etc.

Not happening. Just deductive logic.

Many years ago, I was doing one of those “leadership” courses so loved by the public sector. On one of the days we returned from lunch and before the next session started, one of the trainers asked

“Has anyone got a new car recently?” Quite a few people raised their hands. He pointed to a lady at the back and asked what sort of car she’d got.

“A Fiat Punto”, she said to which he replied, “don’t you see a lot of those around, these days.”

There were loads of nods of agreement as we all agreed.... but we weren’t agreeing about Fiat Puntos but the models of car that we had most recently acquired.

Of course there were no more Puntos around than there were before, but our reaction to them was now different which made it feel as though there were more.

I’ve just rehomed a Spaniel..... there are loads of spaniels around that I’d never noticed before!

Back to the previous post, MacMillan adverts are everywhere. Your response to them depends on your recent experience so the “outcome” is that you notice them whereas previously they’d have passed you by.

The “leadership trainers” that started this post used this to demonstrate how an outcome could be changed by your response to a situation or experience.

So no, Facetwit isn’t listening.

It is, however watching what you are doing very closely indeed, as is Google. This happens whether or not you have a FaceTwit or Google account.
