After the spider post, I wonder if there are any entomologists here?

Over the past couple of days the air has been filled with little midge type insects. They look a little like greenfly but with larger wings and power blue bodies (OK, not much like greenfly at all!)

Any ideas what they might be.... Google has failed me.

There are fewer today and I can't see a non-airborne one to take a photo of.

I get some small black flies in my kitchen if I don't empty the bin often enough. I assumed they were some sort of fruit fly but maybe not a fruit fly!

These aren't fruit flies (Drosophila) if I can remember back to my school biology.

Flying ants probably - I have to clean my truck windscreen daily as there seems to be swarms of them in biblical proportions up here with the dry weather.

They aren't flying ants either... too small they're tiny

I think they're aphids of some kind.... like winged greenfly.... but blue.
