After the spider post, I wonder if there are any entomologists here?

Over the past couple of days the air has been filled with little midge type insects. They look a little like greenfly but with larger wings and power blue bodies (OK, not much like greenfly at all!)

Any ideas what they might be.... Google has failed me.

There are fewer today and I can't see a non-airborne one to take a photo of.

These aren't fruit flies (Drosophila) if I can remember back to my school biology.

I think they're aphids of some kind.... like winged greenfly.... but blue.
