Safest option is stay put. But if freezing levels are low over the land, but you have VMC, you could, (if you wish) stay low level and follow lake Melville and the Hamilton Inlet all the way from Goose Bay to the Atlantic coast. You even have a diversion airfield at Rigolet. (Used to do that run on a regular basis when I was flying from Goose Bay - long before GPS and moving maps)

Take care !

“Sorry Sir, didn’t you hear my transmission on HF, must be a problem with my kit. I’ll continue using VHF - and relays if necessary”. I had HF on two crossings - but never worked so continued on VHF. We never lost VHF with Iceland radio. Only time we lost it was 150nm south of Goose enroute to Montreal. Had about 3 hours of relaying via airliners.

Nuuk is also a much better stopover than Narsarsuaq.

Coming Eastbound, you loose about 2 hours of local time on each leg, and it can sometimes be difficult to get to Narsarsuaq before their closing time. AFAIR, Nuuk is open about two hours longer than Narsarsuaq. Also more, and much better hotels and restaurants.

Rent a car and explore Happy Valley and Northwest River. On the way to NW River you find Otter Creek, the seaplane base. Usually 6-10 DH3 Otters / DH6 twin otters and an occasional Beaver (DH2).
There is a very interesting Air Forces Museum on the airport. It used t be inside the USAF area, but they were talking about moving it into a public accessible area - ask Woodward’s.
NB If you get in there, you might find a photo of yours truly on display. (B/W photo showing 2 young guys carving a life size ice sculpture of a Sperm whale).

Reminds me of flying to San Francisco on a 747 at 30000+ somewhere mid-Atlantic, I was admiring the cloudscape out of the window and wondering what the grey bits were - oh! cumulus granitus sticking out of ice, we're actually over Greenland...

Have a really great trip Katamarino, look forward to the updates.

With the freezing level above 2,500ft along the route, and improving towards Greenland, it's tempting to head out; but the options for return are limited with the way the TAF looks. What say the Atlantic crossing gurus? I'm leaning towards no, being a newbie. My route in red...

I'm a wimp, and not a guru. I'd stay put! One of the great pleasures of my Atlantic crossing was flying over the Canadian arctic scenery. If you can wait a bit and do it with good visibility, it will be more fun than slogging through cloud, hoping that the freezing level stays high enough - particularly as there is high terrain. It's perhaps dull and boring for veterans of multiple crossings, but it's different and fascinating the first time.

On my trip the weather forecasts weren't as reliable as they are in more inhabited regions. Freezing levels weren't an issue in August, but forecast cloud base was often quite wrong, and the winds between Canada and Greenland were much stronger than I expected - which caused me to arrive 7 minutes after closing time. That was a €1000 mistake!

Enjoy the trip whenever you do it!

Sod it - stay on the ground. Being optimistic and hoping for better weather is not a good trait when flying an SEP across the Atlantic.

Go look at the museum and the Vulcan bomber. The museum is now in the public accessible area.

I am pm’ing you the number of my ex RAF friend who may be able to meet up with you.
