Hi all,

My GNS530w decided it no longer wants to receive comms. Can anyone recommend and avionics shop/bod localish to the Bath/Kemle/Swindon/Gloucester area? the unit is in an N reg if that makes any difference.

Thanks in Advanced.

Seconded. Not cheap, but by far the best avionics man in the SW.

Have you tried re-racking it? Simply use an Allen key in the front mounting hole. Make sure to use the correct size and don't force anything. Undo it and prize the unit out, then gently push it back in. It cures many an avionics ill and is the first course of action on a jet airliner..... ;-)

3/32 I think

Ian

Remember all avionics use imperial screw sizes whereas most Allen keys sold in the UK are metric sizes. You can buy imperial, you just need to search them out.

And I don’t know the 530 but it’s probably a long one needed.

I can confirm this is a perfect fit:-

There should be almost no resistance at all - when you're turning the key, all you are doing is moving a small cam. Insert the tool, and turn it anti-clockwise - it's about 6-8 turns. You should see the unit moving towards you slightly (only 2-3mm). Once you meet resistance, back off a quarter turn. At this point, the unit should come out fine.

This of course is all in the installation manual, freely available on the Garmin website.
3.9.2 400W Series Unit Insertion and Removal

It may be necessary to insert the hex drive tool into the access hole and rotate the mechanism 90° counterclockwise to insure correct position prior to placing the unit in the rack. The 400W Series unit is installed in the rack by sliding it straight in until it stops, about 1 inch short of the final position. A 3/32-inch hex drive tool is then inserted into the access hole at the bottom of the unit face. Rotate the hex tool clockwise while pressing on the left side of the bezel until the unit is firmly seated in the rack.

To remove the unit from the rack, insert the hex drive tool into the access hole on the unit face and rotate counterclockwise until the unit is forced out about 3/8 inches and can be freely pulled from the rack.

Be sure not to over tighten the unit into the rack. The application of hex drive tool torque exceeding 15 in-lbs can damage the locking mechanism.
