What an amazing day, sunshine, bit of cloud cover to cool down & plenty of fast jet action.

I used a 5DS, 5DMKIV & 7DMKII with a Prime 800mm, all handheld.

Excellent. Very good indeed.

These knock spots off what I achieved. Just goes to show, Pentax AF and no practice since Farnborough '14 isn't a combination that's going to win any airshow photography awards.

Very well done, and I won't be offering to arm wrestle you either, if you spent the day swinging an 800mm lens on the end of your camera around without needing an ice bath at the end of it.

:thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

PS Much as I usually dislike helicopters on religious grounds, I am particularly impressed with your shots of the Agusta and Chinook - rotor blur without camera shake. Respect.

PPS... where were you exactly, by the way? Right at the front of the crowd line, one side or other of the grandstand, would be my guess, but I'd appreciate a hint for next time. And how early did you have to get there to get the spot?

It’s always a good work out after a whole day with the 800mm, who needs the gym

I was at the viewing village, right at the front. It’s much nicer I find in the viewing village with chairs already there, your own toilets, plus if you want you can have a grandstand seat, but I always perfer a garden seat at the front. I live near Portsmouth, we left here at 4:15am  Was in the queue for around 6am waiting for the gates to open, plenty of front crowd line available when we got in.

Look forward to seeing your pictures from the day, if you plan to post them.

Thanks for the info :thumleft:

... yes, much like my Farnborough routine in the years I went, although I live a lot closer than that.
Look forward to seeing your pictures from the day, if you plan to post them.

Having seen yours, I hardly dare. I only got a few decent ones - I was with friends, nowhere near the front. I got the B2, and the F35B in the hover, and a handful of others, none as good as yours. Funnily enough, one is of the RCAF FA18, and it's virtually identical to your one!

I'll post a few of them when I've got over the depression of the 99% that were carp.

Hi Richard

I was there on the Friday, grey skies and the odd shower so a disappointing day for photography. Your shots are amazing, that 800 prime certainly does the job. Well done :thumleft:
I might post some of mine in a day or two if I can motivate myself to root through all the grey ones

Those are great photos! I am surprised you used a 5DS for an airshow. Which of the three cameras did you prefer using for the show?

I was there at the weekend and watched the show one day then walked around for the next. It meant I got to go into a C130, RAF Voyager and an AWAC's :)

The link below should take you to my pix on Facebook taken with a Canon 7dII and a Sigma 50-500 and 10-20 lenses.

I love the 5DS, I know it’s not a camera for sports or action, but it works well for me. Most of the day I used the 5DS, swapped sometimes with the 7DMKII for a closer shot. Only used the 5DMKIII for runway or static shots on the day.

Really nice pictures there. Never used a 50-500 but it looks like it does really well.
