Word of warning to anyone up for a medical. Check their prices before you book. My regular AME is no longer practising, so selected a new one from the CAA's website. Usual cost of a Class 2 with ECG, around £250. This bloke, an eye-watering £390! The CAA have confirmed they give not a toss what they charge. It is appalling that a regulatory body that governs every aspect of our flying and is so keen to prosecute should we err, could licence its bandits to line their pockets. After all, take your car to a private garage for MoT and there's a cap on how much can be charged. And it don't stop there, either. Having failed the ECG, I find I now need to have an echocardiogram with a CAA cardiologist who charges twice the London going rate. It's more than a cartel, it's a shameful racket. I now find myself priced out of GA by the CAA's abysmal attitude. Anyone else been affected like this?
