Towards end of years 1, 3, 5, etc they do a competency flight (failable) with an SA instructor.
To get a new type within SEP (eg p28a after flying c172),again an SA instructor needed.
Both require forms lodged with SA CAA
Because our instructors are used to
converting FAA to a new aircraft, they are good at telling the SA pilots 'it will be ok'... But it isnt!

"what happens with ratings such as multi-engine? Do they have to be revalidated separately or does the competency flight cover you for extra ratings too?"

There is no specific revalidation check for class ratings. The check done to maintain the validity of the licence will keep class rating privileges valid.

If the recent experience requirement for carrying passengers is done on an MEP then it will be valid also for SEPs.

"alternate competency flights can alternate sep/mep"

An IR may be revalidated on alternate classes if they are endorsed on the rating. The IR revalidation in turn keeps the associated licence valid.

SA-CAR 61.11.7

(3) Where the IR is endorsed with SEA and MEA, every alternate
revalidation of this rating may be carried out in a single engine
aeroplane or in an FSTD approved for the purpose.

(4) The revalidation check for an IR revalidates the maintenance of
competency of a licence endorsed with an IR for a period of 12 months,
provided that the aircraft or FSTD meets the requirements for the
maintenance of competency of that licence.

SEA and MEA correspond to SEP and MEP, cf. SA-CAR 61.09.1(4)(a).

It might be necessary for the licence revalidation check to be done on an aircraft registered in South Africa.

And is still called a competency check, isn't it? And form lodged

and unless changed recently, the competency check must be done in SA by a SA instructor (unless specifically exempted, i would guess)

Yes, a competency check for the maintainance of competency of a pilot licence and a revalidation check for the purpose of revalidating a pilot rating. The term revalidation check is nevertheless used in SA-CAR 61.03.7(1) "The holder of a PPL(A) shall undergo a revalidation check ..."

In case it comes up elsewhere, the regulation at SA-CAR 61.09.7(2) has been deleted:

(2) If the variant has not been flown within a period of 24 months
following the differences training or the date of last having flown
the variant, further differences training or a proficiency check in
that variant will be required.
