Very interesting @Flyin'Dutch' .

MrT6 was diagnosed with high bp just over a year ago during a routine check up, despite reasonable diet and exercise regime.
He was prescribed one lot of tablets after another in an effort to find one he could tolerate. After the forth type also affected him badly his GP told him to stop taking it, did not prescribe or suggest any other possible treatment and that was that! Possibly due to other demands on NHS, I should think.

Your mention that the current NICE prescribing practice is a low dose of 2 different meds is very enlightening. I shall suggest MrT6 sends a query to his GP with a hint about trying combination low doses and see what transpires. After all, I don't want to lose him.
