Back in one piece and excited to share with you the video footage of our trip to the North Cape / Lofoten:

It has been raise-the-bar in every aspect, at least for me: Most intense turbulence, most difficult approach, worst weather conditions, most beautiful airport (ENSH) & leg. And just the overall scenery was worth all the effort. Also June seemed a good choice with regards to weather.

First time for me in a Diesel C172 with fully upgraded avionics :cyclopsani:

Everything in 4K, I hope you enjoy it & let me know what you think :thumright:

We landed at nearby Leknes and stayed locally on the Spitsbergen trip in March 2006. The Lofoten Islands were truly world-class stunning, particularly at that snow-covered time of year. A place to which myself and Timothy would long to return.

Now, having watched the video, you visited many places that we did on that trip, Leknes, Tromsø, Hammerfest, Stockholm Bromma, Aalborg (single-engine landing due fuel icing).

We had put IPA in the fuel, 1% by volume, all the way around the trip up to Svalbard, except for the last but one leg, Stockholm Bromma to Esbjerg, Denmark. At F100 and -20C in the airway, we were directly over the top of Aalborg (and talking to them) when one of the engines went to very low RPM. It was obvious that we could lose the second, so an emergency descent onto the ILS was initiated. The engine recovered on the ground, IPA was added and we carried on.

That video brings back many memories, having ridden to Nordkapp on my motorcycle with my wife more than 30 years ago. How I would like to fly it!

@Nick There were so many bikers around ;) My plan was to not get overly impressed, since the North Cape is a tourist place with gift shop and all... but once I got there and stood near the monument it became quite clear quite quickly, it is a special place.

@Iceman That is quite a scary story

As has so often been said it's not the destination but the tour there and back! Watching the midnight sun settle above the sea, then rise again is unforgettable. It was a hard ride in those days, on mainly gravel roads and lots of ferry crossings.

Lovely video!

I flew to Nordkapp in 1996 in formation with a Cub and a C172 (with a Pa32 in tow) from Leicester EGBG; a memorable flight. About 50 hours round trip for me and the Cub, eleven of which was in one day from Florø to Hammerfest.

Thanks for the memory! (Photo below is some random Norwegian landscape, not the cape)

As an aside, when we flew around the cape itself, we were below the cliff height, because the Nordcapp itself was in the cloud!

@Rob L You are most welcome! :)

If you look at the video at 7:34, that is precisely what happened to us as well. It is actually the North Cape, just in a thick layer of clouds. The leg from Hammerfest to Mehamn was the most demanding due to weather.

P.S.: Always wanted to fly a Cub…one day maybe ;)

Hello.....It's been a while

Reading through this post brought back some great memories of our trip to Spitsbergen.

Sadly I read that it is now 'off limits' to GA flights. - Shame, I would love to go back :-) I guess it makes our log book entries (ENSB) even more exclusive..
