I’ve been busy these past three weeks.
It’s interesting getting straight back in to flying instruction in a variety of aircraft and finding that much of my motor skills are still there.
Of particular note was going up to coach a chap in slow rolls in the Super Decathlon; when was the last time I did a slow roll? It went very well.
Then the basics in a Cessna 152, Piper Warrior checkouts, Citabria, and Chipmunk for fun.
A Katana 100 has an oil consumption problem probably indicated by the fact it burps very quickly when doing the oil level check.
The owner insisted on using 100LL in his engine, this according to what he was told when he bought the aeroplane in Ontario. Why go against the manufacturer’s recommendations in this regard?
Lead everywhere! Maybe on the rings too?
I’ve done five flights... The first of 1.2 hours lost 600ml of oil!
I topped up with Chevron 94 octane Mogas and the next flight the engine used no oil! What kind of coincidence is this?
Been running Chevron since with less than 100ml lost each flight... Still too much.
Last flight we took a gauge to measure the crankcase pressure, maximum 8lbs it went over 9lbs, so it’s blowing the oil out, beyond the belly of the aeroplane.
David Lai flew with me on the last of these flights and published a video:
