Having declared myself to thick for this programme I watched this again this week and got one right in the first half, did okayish on the links board (the 4 x 4 connections) and was pretty hot on the missing vowels.

So anyone else out there fancy a go - at least we'd meet the lovely Victoria Coren.

VC won a ton of money I think. I was once in a queue to get on a 'plane at LHR just behind Alan Coren, would have loved to have talked to him, very funny, educated chap, I bet I was the only one who recognised him!

Yes we've been watching the reruns and still didn't remember them. I did actually write to them to apply but my friend decided he wasn't interested in going on it.

I would be interested in getting a team together for series 5 (assuming they do one) - Kanga as you can do the Mephisto you must be a good candidate! Irv Lee was interested I wonder if he put a team in?

I have known members of 2 OC teams. Both included very successful veterans of other competitive shows (Countdown, 15 to 1, Uni Challenge, ..), and are stalwarts and regular stars of local pub quiz scene. All involved had much better trivia knowledge than I do (especially, eg, music, sports, contemporary culture, ..). Neither team won their series! I reckon that the standard is very high (there's a lot of weeding of applicants before teams are selected for games to be screened).

I don't think I'd be much of an asset to any team, although when I do know the 1st stage answers (less than the typical competitors) I can reasonably often spot the connexion even if they could not.

So, I'm flattered by the suggestion, but I think I'll continue to be content just to watch.

[oh, and one of those OCers whom I know can also complete the Listener crossword (solo) more regularly than we (spouse and I) can, and that's a lot tougher than Mephisto]

From latest RT: new series starts next week, BBC2 Friday (starting 28 July), 2030.

University Challenge restarted this week, Monday BBC2 2000. RT this week called it 'the brainiest TV quiz show'. OC requires just as much or more obscure general knowledge and then an ability to do imaginative lateral thinking against a short fixed timer; as opposed to Paxman sometimes saying "I'll have to hurry you". Oh, and I find the contestants as well as the host on OC considerable more personable!
