Incidentally, twelve years ago I bought an OBDII self-diagnosis scanner, and it has been invaluable in diagnosing simple faults; for example which wheel ABS sensor has failed (common on VWs). Cost then was about £75.

Considering that most garages charge £35-£65 for a simple diagnosis, it was a no-brainer for me to have one. And it works on other than VWs too!

I rapidly found that owning an XK8 develops a degree of familiarity with the use of an OBDII device too….

It would have got you a really good one up until last night but as I understand it, the sale has been agreed. I told Iceman about it but I think it's just a couple of days too late.

I'm impressed that the AA have offered you a 'real world' solution to the problem. Probably done because they can claim it as a roadside breakdown fix and got you going, irrespective of the longer term implications.
