With any luck the Vogons will be along shortly. I just hope it's quick.

Got your Guildford party invite yet?

It could all turn out very different.... cats could be the dominant species, the top dog, I mean Top Cat could oversee things differently with carefully positioned meerkats. There could be a national dipping of paws in pocket to fund a program to explore nature across the planet, with commentary by the legendary Kitty Cattenborough. Kitty gets an award for observation of a species called humans, which involves gps tagging and fitting of miniature cameras to many examples to monitor their movements, social interactions, eating, drinking and procreation habits and rituals. There is a Cat Mane Society certificate stating no humans are harmed by the tranquilliser darting and fitting of trackers and cameras so the audience can sleep well at night. The pussy population will be purring wildly with amusement at how humans get bogged down with paperwork and red tape and that is without trying to cross the border into the territory of another community with their own opinions, lingo and priorities. Getting the subtitles right is proving difficult without a babel fish due to budget cutbacks and outsourcing to a pre-furred supplier.

The future Paw Air Force will be equipped with the latest version of the F14 Tomcat extra Milk Probe for air-to-air refuelling, plus upgraded CatNap auto-pilot, CatWhileScan targeting, integrated with nextgen cat of nine tails launcher optimised for precision non catastrophic show of force with no spilt milk. The top cat fighters, form a new school...

A not unreasonable analysis. Sadly it leaves the West / NATO little option other than to do exactly what Putin fears - to station troops and hardware in Ukraine while fast tracking Ukraine into NATO.

Russia can't have it both ways by being expansionist while bullying the threatened nations engaged in their own self-preservation.

A quarter million NATO troops, a dozen squadrons and a couple of carrier fleets sailing up the Dardanelles is the only proper response. Then Putin will have a self inflicted domestic crisis that will keep him both occupied and in his hole. And of course, the West will bottle it and let Russia walk into Donetsk under the cover of Covid.

..

USSR in 1945 snaffled to be part of Russia even under USSR and resettled with ethnic Russians (expelling most of those ethnic Germans who had not fled) the East Prussian port of Königsberg. It is now 'Kaliningrad' in its own exclave separated from the rest of Russia by the Baltics. There Russia now has an icefree port on the Baltic also. Vladivostok on the Pacific is also icefree.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaliningrad

['Kaliningrad' is one of the few places renamed after Communist heroes in the Soviet era which has not been renamed again nor reverted to its old name; but Der Spiegel still always uses the old name, which is its usual style with any former Germanophone place :?

Hopefully we don't get too carried away. But at the same time even with 10,000 more tanks than us or whatever they shouldn't get away totally unmolested for being global crooks.

This is a great video illustrating the scale of the human cost of WW2. To be honest I think it will be small local skirmishes / appeasement.

Perhaps more topical for this discussion:

or this one...

If so Putin must hold on to access for strategic reasons.

Tartus, Syria, Eastern Med'.

And Algeria if rumours doing the round are to be believed, which apparently they aren't. Presumably the Russki disinformation factories have some agenda for promulgating that story? Tunisia seems a bit partial too.

Calais?

NATO should admit Ukraine tomorrow morning by emergency resolution. Game over Vlad.

I’d suggest to wait for the inevitable Game over Vlad, and during the mourning period- quietly bring Ukraine into NATO.

For once, NATO can play a long game and “win”.

CloudHound wrote:Include Sweden and Finland too

Sweden and Finland are constitutionally committed to neutrality. Additionally, that Finnish neutrality is both guaranteed by and committed by treaty at the end of WW2 to the USSR, in return for which the USSR evacuated some military positions which they had occupied .. by UN agreement, Russia is heir to the Treaty rights and obligations of the USSR. The same, incidentally, is true of Austria.

So it's a bit more complicated than 'inviting' them into NATO. Obviously, it doesn't prevent either of them cooperating militarily with other nations, who might be NATO members, on a bilateral basis; and this happens regularly already
