It’s funny how differently one can read that ‘development’!

For me, it looked very much like an ill thought out, off the cuff remark from an elderly, cognitively challenged individual who is WAY out of his depth! But who wishes to appear to be something he is not!

Let’s bear a few things in mind: Firstly the grown ups rapidly restated there was absolutely no change in the US’ policy towards China or Taiwan. Secondly, that decades old policy was one of ‘constructive ambiguity’. In other words, don’t rock the boat! Thirdly he was part of the administration that painted a ‘red line’ in Syria over the use of chemicals, then absent mindedly misplaced’ it when those weapons were used. Fourthly his grasp on the office of Commander in Chief was amply demonstrated in the utterly shambolic withdrawal from Afghanistan. Fifthly his competence in diplomacy and understanding the threat, was gloriously on show when he invited Putin to just mount a ‘little invasion’ into sovereign Ukrainian territory.

Clearly for fear of Russia’s nuclear arsenal he has no intention whatsoever of defending a European country in the way most people believe he meant the China comments. Yet if he’s scared of Russia’s nuclear weapons, he will obviously suffer the same terrified paralysis of fear over Taiwan!

The man is an imbecile who is WAY out of his depth. I am not surprised in the least that Putin waited for his arrival in the Oval Office before mounting his attack. Biden’s throw away comment makes him look stupid and frankly borderline demented. He is probably the worst US President in my lifetime.

The world is now a far more dangerous place due in great part to his presence!

For the avoidance of any doubt, I have made no comment whatsoever on his politics. Only his competence!

He also spent three decades on gun control , yet fourteen elementary schoolkids died today in yet another mass shooting.

He's just a loose gob on a stick.

Thoughts and prayers should do it Mr. Biden, thoughts and prayers.

On topic, Russia (or some Russians) has been spotted stealing grain and shipping it to Syria. Since Russia has had a bumper harvest this year what's the betting that this is an under-the-table spoils of war cash converter for senior Russian / pro-Russia military and politicians?

Again on topic, Denmark is providing some fancy dan long-range Harpoon shore to ship missiles part of some 20 nation equipment coalition.

Very much on topic; There's a Lithuanian proposal - with UK agreement - that the RN + others do some mine clearing and escort grain out of the Black Sea, providing that Russia cooperates.

The three things don't seem unrelated to me. I'm sending thoughts and prayers.

Presidents of both Parties have been frustrated by the NRA lobby in Congress (mostly, but not all, Republican, especially in the Senate) since Lyndon Johnson in the '60s.

And?

Not a single one of them put their presidency on the line to sort it out. Not one. Including the current dilitante.

Too many half cock excuses. What's it worth, all those children's lives cut short, lives ruined, families and communities wrecked.

So many people are sick of establishment excuses for why their lives are destroyed with nothing in return but fine words but not a murmur why they don't understand. This is how revolution foments and lots of people need to adjust their outlook while taking care that their neck isn't exposed.*

In other news; Russia has wrecked 12 airports. Not sure we have 12 UK runways that we could call airports. :?

Under the US Constitution, there is remarkably little that an incumbent President can do to override a matter largely devolved to the individual States without a working majority in both houses of Congress. I'd not call any of the Presidents who have tried imposing greater gun control at Federal level but been frustrated in Congress as dilettanti. Some background

"America's gun culture - in seven charts"

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-41488081

"US gun control: What is the NRA and why is it so powerful?"

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-35261394

"Texas shooting: America's gun control debate that never goes away"

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-61585716

A Texas Senator, a credible rival to Trump for the Republican nomination in 2916, has again suggested that the way to prevent school massacres was to arm teachers

@kanga I'm pretty confident that after an afternoon with a bunch of constitutional lawyers, you (or, heaven forfend, even I) would work out how to nail it. The idea that a constitution can't be amended is massively undermined by the very many amendments to consitutions.

It's not a matter of Law, it's a matter of will. Sadly, in the USA, the whole democracy is so corrupted that they can't do the simplest things.

Back on topic :
It’s interesting that the Ukraine conflict which half filled news programmes last week did not get a single mention in either of the two main terrestrial channel News programmes tonight.

DT news stream talks gloomily of massive Russian push, outnumbering the Ukrainians 7:1 and risk of encirclement.

Not sounding too good .

Break-break anybody following C5 Chernobyl mini series?

I can’t believe that Ben Fogle’s commentary talks of ‘newcular disaster ‘ still even when other contributors in the prog pronounce it correctly Do these programmes not have literate producers?

You can follow the situation fairly well from Denis Davydov’s YouTube channel. He is a Ukrainian airline captain (737) and has a realistic and aviation-orientated perspective. He states that he lives in West Ukraine and only has a few contacts in the East for direct information, but uses open source maps.

:thumright:

.. but the bars to changing the US Constitution in an Amendment are made much higher (in that Constitution, in its original 18th C form) than are those to passing a Federal Law; in particular, the requirement for Ratification by the legislatures of 3/4 of the States within a limited time after the passage by Congress. There have been only 27 Amendments since 1789, one of which simply repealed another (on Prohibition). The Equal Rights Amendment, proposed 1972, failed 'out of time' in 1982; a measure which to most of those in other democratic societies seemed and still seems glaringly overdue.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_a ... nstitution

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equal_Rights_Amendment

What this means is that nothing jointly drafted by the collective wisdom of Forumites (including @eltonioni and me  ) would have any chance of passing these obstacles.

So (back to topic), I judge that the latest school shooting cannot fairly be adduced to any personal shortcoming of the current President, nor therefore to be included in any perceived (by some) catalogue of his personal shortcomings reflected in current US policy over Ukraine.
