@kanga, interesting. Cruel to the animal, but logical.

The whole idea of a just world without pain, cruelty, or any level of suffering for any creature is maybe just a bit ambitious ideology with its roots in the privileged position the first world finds itself?

At about the same time as seal clubbing in the northern reaches of Canada was exposed, it put paid to seal culls in the coastal regions of north Scotland to protect near shore salmon fishing. There are so many seals now that during summer drought conditions, when salmon cannot get upstream to spawn, seals pick them off in their thousands, thereby breaking the natural cycle. Still, we witness the annual slaughter of Dolphin in the Faroes and turn a blind eye to Japanese take of the whale for “scientific”reasons. The Chinese reject Viagra in favour of bliddy Tiger bones and Rhino horn.
I don’t blame the Inuit one little bit - they have little else to survive on. Those that condemn them ought to have a taste of self survival in those regions.

They'll have to go to their local Tesco equivalent instead...

You think? I reckon they would also condemn them for choosing to live in those regions. Good chance they believe they should abandon their loves and move to a more 'civilised' region.

On the contrary. More than I remember when I lived among them in the '60s, both Indigenous and Settler parents and grandparents in those communities seem to take their children out with them hunting and trapping, although there have been at least 3 generations of good basic education and health care, with externally recognised formal qualification also available to many. Now, of course, I know about this because the adults evidently proudly post relevant pictures on Facebook

I have a hunch that the next Enlightenment will be the first real time translation of a pig / cow / sheep saying "please don't kill me".

That's going to be a rough time for humanity and it might not be very far off - we'll probably see it. God knows how we're going to justify it.

 I'd be like "Apex predator! So jog on Peppa - Dont matter how intelligent you are without opposable thumbs especially if you taste as good as bacon"

We probably have to watch out for octopi they have more chance of using our weapons against us - but I can't understand how people can eat those.

Anything with more than 4 "legs" shouldn't be eaten.

We don't necessarily have to eat them...

Not to say we need to be cruel. someone I know has a partner that works in life sciences. The test they take around protecting animal welfare is pretty stringent they can only do one retest - if they fail they can never take it again. :cyclopsani:

Remember the whole concept of justification and 'animal rights' is of our making. It's not something imposed on us externally.

(None of which is an attempt to excuse cruelty)

Exactly animal rights is western luxury when we can chose avocado toast.

John Travolta has been filming 'The Shepherd' in Norfolk. I reckon it would be a challenge to get a visual version as effective as an audio one (or the written original), but I'll be interested in hearing about and maybe seeing the result :)

Will 'The Shepherd' have references to Thetans :pirat:

Strange messages travelling over the ether, from distant volcanoes to guide a traveller home....
