So that confirms what I thought partly: if energy goes ‘go back’ into the grid it’s not actually measured by the energy company and the consumers’ ‘payment’is formulaic , being calculated presumably by the consumers’ own kit .

It seems the installation of a heat pump qualifies for a Government Renewable Heat Incentive which will take 7 years to get the full benefit but pays about a grand a year in the meantime. Total quoted cost of installation of this is just over £10K... I am having a chat with the company tomorrow and will revert.
