True, but that ain't the issue here is it?

Those who are taking part in that action will be fully aware of it.

But the numbskulls who undertake the racial attacks and more importantly the silent bystanders may well wake up to the fact that the behaviour of these numbskulls is having a detrimental effect on the bystanders' social media experience and so the awareness is increased and getting to a better place is a small step closer.

Sadly, these changes takes years to get common conscience to move and get to a better place.

That has nothing to do with wokeness or personal preference or getting their own house in order - it's the law (and common decency)

Should your EC choice be included on the list?

Racists and abusers have always been with us and sadly probably always will be. They will also exploit whatever tools are available to them. It follows that every effort should be made to constrain their access to and use of those tools. They should also be subject to severe sanctions when identified.

Yes, but you can easily spot them as they're mostly football supporters...

I think a largely overlooked fact in all this is that not every abuser is in fact racist. The tendency to hurl insults in an attempt to hurt the target naturally leads to focusing on differences. That may be colour, accent, nationality, religion, spotty face, or even just calling someone who wears specs and speccy B. I don't buy it that everyone who uses racist language is in fact hardcore racist.

A bit like the adolescents telling their parents they hate them.

Doesn't Flyer Forum fall into the social media category?

for clarity, I'm asking a question, not picking on anyone!

These problems are a symptom, not the disease itself. Social media just gives those symptoms higher visibility than was previously the case.

The disease is due to parents doing a poor job, and failing to teach their children that:

1. Rights go hand in hand with responsibilities, and

2. Tolerance is possibly the most important quality that is needed to foster a good society.

Sadly, things seem to be going the opposite way. Rights are taught as paramount, and responsibilities are downplayed. And people are becoming less tolerant.

I'm becoming more and more misanthropic as I get older. I'm starting to think Private Frazer has a point.

Fair enough? What about if an establishment is owned by someone who themselves has controversial views - what happens if that person doesnt like a political view or football team, even a nationality or a step further, a race? Does a landlord get sanctioned if two custoners get into a fight? Should a social media platform?

Florida legislates to 'ban banning politicians' (through heavy fines) by social media. Likely to be ruled unconstitutional:

The problem with social media is that unlike a pub, it actively AMPLIFIES the hateful messages.

In a pub if you say something bigoted and everyone else at the bar shouts you down, it has the required effect of drowning you out.

On social medai however the algorithm treats those angry reactions as indicators of “engagement” and pushes you pr message wider

An “angry face” on Facebook? Still counts as engagement. Still pushes you up the search rankinging not down it. A reply on Twitter to tell you you’re a racist knobend? Engagement. A quote retweet to debunk your hateful gender theories? Engagement.

The only that works IS withdrawal of attention. Muting, blocking, reporting. Boycotting if needed.

You nailed it. Added to that is the rush to 'be a good ally' which is also detrimental since it feeds the fire and, as you say, amplifies the original sin. As we should all have learned since 2016 (due B word) nobody ever changed their opinion by being insulted about their opinion.

Sunlight is truly a great disinfectant but at the end of the day decent content moderation by the owner of the outlet is the only option that's either useful or doable.
