That rather depends as memory can play tricks. In the late 1960s I owned my first car and it didn't even have a heater. Can you imagine the reaction today if such a vehicle appeared? I had to wipe ice off the inside of the windscreen in winter. The 1970s saw the demise of quality in some previously great brands. Rover for example was a prestige brand until it became part of British Leyland when, if any could be produced during non-striking periods, the quality visibly suffered. I loved driving employer-provided Rovers but for a private owner obtaining spare parts was a constant challenge.

In the 1970s reliability of many brands was an issue and during that decade my AA membership was used more than in all the subsequent decades combined.

It is true that there were some memorable cars produced during the 60s and 70s, but for the average punter the car on their drive today is an order of magnitude better value as reliable transport.

@MikeE First brand new car I ever bought, rapidly followed, a year later by the Escort Mexico and when that clocked up 90000 miles in 4 years it was replaced by a Marina TC before I entered a life of company cars.

In the meantime MrsJohnm drove this:

as everyday transport for about 30 years

@johnm . What were you thinking?

I love the half-timbered Morris. My Dad had two of those as company cars, and being we were three brothers and I was the youngest I always had the tail-gunner's position at the back. I am guessing that would be an instant prosecution today.

The plan was a Cortina GT but MrsJohnm didn't like the way it looked so the Marina ended up in the garage

Many people don't realise that the timber frame at the back of the Morris was actually the structure and aluminium panels, including the roof, were nailed to it!

The kids loved it and learned to drive on it.

The Mk1 GT was a lovely bit of kit, I owned three of them in total. But I have to agree with your missus, the Mk2 was very dull looking. When the 1600E came along it was an improvement, but it still looked dowdy (Though not as dowdy as the Marina)

If we only knew - the cars we had then are worth a small fortune now. My Mk 2 Lotus Cortina did look dull but it fairly nipped along for its day.
Would the DVLA retain a record of cars that you’ve had - I’d just like to know if it’s still around ?

I’m off on Wednesday to pick up my new car - the first petrol one in 40 years.

Yes, you can search registrations and see if they are still in existence. Sorry, I don't have the link offhand.

However that model seems to be breeding.

@Foo Gee If you go down the SLK route is may be worth checking rear wheel configuration. Ours has the 245 rear tyres not the 225 and that moves the tax category from K (£330) to L (£560)

Or maybe its registration number did. I realised too late that I let KEA 8 K lapse and missed the opportunity to make a few quid :(
