I've never had a pet, except a small aquarium as a kid. Might get one when I retire in ten years or so, or sooner if this working-from-home-thing becomes permanent.

Are pilots in general cat people or dog people? From the threads here it seems there are plenty of both, even plenty who are both.

This is 'Beans', named 'Cocoa' when we got her fully grown, corrupted to 'Cocoa-Bean' then 'Beans'. Also variously referred to as 'Buns', 'Scraggy-Baggy' and more. She lived to 20, a pretty good age for a moggy.

This forumite, having tried both camps, is firmly in the cat camp and have had many over the half century of our marriage:

We tend to get them in twos, and our present pair (siblings) are 18 next month.

However they are getting a bit doddery, are impatient (quite reasonably) with the grandkids and sadly have become none too choosy about where they cr ap, despite litter trays all over the place and plenty of garden soil borders.....................

Hmm.................

When these two croak, I think we'll call it a day in the pet department.

Just to be clear here, is that last paragraph referring to said forumite and his marriage partner, or to their feline companions?

Probably too late for this pair of Peter's, but we simply never have a litter tray in the house from the moment the kitten is small enough to venture out.

We have a chip-activated cat door. If they want to relieve themselves it's the garden or the neighbouring farm or cemetery.

Before we moved house to the bottom of the garden, our former house was hard on a busy road:

The free-ranging ethos we used to espouse for our cats came to an end many years ago when our two pedigree Burmese, with typically zippo road sense, were splatted in quick succession, both before reaching their first birthday.

We've had street-wise moggies since then:

Since we locked the cats in at night and gave them cr ap trays, longevity has been the order of the day: The previous pair reached 15.

Indeed, the motor car is top predator in the cat world.

Since moving to our village in 1997 we have lost just one of the seven feline companions to a traffic accident, just coming up to her first birthday - the lovely Catalina.

The others have all managed to get well into their teens and die of natural causes or euthanasia.

All moggs. Two from Wood Green, three from Newmarket and Bearcat the snowkitten, who has the tiniest smattering of Bengal in her otherwise street-mog DNA
