I’ve been to a few dives when in the RN and survived them all. Best food of the lot was at the evening car park “eateries” of Singapore. Brilliant food cooked over charcoal crucibles. Worst - most definitely the hole that was Olongapo in the Philippines - across the bridge over a wide drainage ditch from the American Naval Base (now gone). You took your life in your hands going ashore. It was a step back into the Wild West. I’d tell you about the “flaming chicken” but it would be too much for some forumites !
