As usual we will probably give the technology to the Yanks. who will then sell the finished product back to us at an inflated price

Not quite selling to the USA - in fact, the Americans GAVE the technology to us. We were light years away from achieving a workable PWR nuclear plant and would be still plodding away today trying to crack it. The Americans threw their finest engineers at it and came out with a wonderfully simple solution. Indeed, since then, we have tried to improve on it but can’t.
Anyway, who are we going to sell this idea to and allow nuclear fuel into unsafe hands. Are we going to have spent fuel returned to the U.K. where there are, as yet, no facility to reprocess it.

Apparently the Small Modular Reactors that use Thorium as their fuel produce a version of Uranium, U232, which doesn't make as big a bang as U235 when make into a weapon! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thorium_fuel_cycle

Now doesn't that make you feel better!!!!

Unfortunately the Rolls-Royce SMRs use good old U-235 which is the base material for instant sunshine! https://www.rolls-royce.com/~/media/Files/R/Rolls-Royce/documents/customers/nuclear/smr-technical-summary.pdf

People like him really shouldn’t breed. 100 years ago he’d have been locked away in an asylum and fed stale bread.

How do you get to be intelligent enough to want to do something about energy use and waste but too thick to know you need a functioning economy to fund the change as well as social media and your middle class lifestyle? Isn't something like 10% of electricity now going into the Internet?

I think he was right...plenty of shouting that "somebody" "must do something" but no volunteers to be that somebody or decide what should be done.

None of it really matters since we're already on the way to dealing with it by grown up means, just like we always do. Youth and politicians will both get to keep their luxe lifestyles and the developing world will join them as it all magically happens around them.

In other news, it's almost as if the BBC is trying to get itself privatised.

Perhaps politicians need to grow up and be frank with the population at large? Explain that large-scale change cannot take place in moments and people must possess their souls in patience while stuff happens. Then they need to make proper plans for timescales a little longer than the blink of an eye that are for the good of the many, rather than the good of their career........
