I suspect that there are liars and cheats in all walks of life. We’ve been discussing one of our own who broke the law on here recently and another who may have stretched the rules to breaking point. I guess they’re not alone.

Hopefully the MP will be deselected by her local party (they seem to like deselecting sitting MPs.)

But will they be allowed to deselect a candidate that ticks so many of the parliamentary diversity boxes?

AIUI, she has been expelled [sic; ie not merely 'suspended'] by her former Party, and would thus be ineligible for readoption by that Party as an official candidate in any future election.

[of course, Parties have been known to readmit former expellees .. ]

Being reported that today Onasanya has been refused leave to appeal so it's likely that a recall petition will be commenced (although not sure how.)

Well, it seems to have been done...
Addressing MPs in the House of Commons, Mr Bercow said the decision triggered the provision of the Recall of MPs Act 2015.

"I will accordingly be writing to the relevant petition officer to inform that person that Fiona Onasanya is therefore subject to a recall petition process," he said.

This means a six-week petition will be open for Ms Onasanya's constituents.

If 10% of them - about 7,000 people - sign the petition, a by-election will be held for the seat.

Poor Michael Crick, he and his colleagues will not be able to bore us senseless with endless queues of talking heads and journalistic insights about a no-mark-soon-to-be-former-MP of no importance. Thanks god for small mercies.

Hmmm, it's an interesting question as to whether there'll be 7000 people who can be **** to sign a petition.

Presumably Twitter and Facebook will be full of encouragement for them to do so (or not) irrespective of what the law says.

And all in an attempt to save a few quid/3 points. I'd love to ask her what she was thinking, but then expecting a sensible answer could be a mistake.

Indeed.....

A former MP who was jailed for lying about a speeding offence has been struck off as a solicitor.

Fiona Onasanya was sentenced to three months in prison in January after being convicted of perverting the course of justice. She served 28 days.

The 35-year-old, who subsequently lost her seat as Peterborough MP, had worked in commercial property law.

She was struck off at a disciplinary tribunal which found she had "failed to act with integrity".

She was ordered to pay £6,562 costs to the Solicitors Regulation Authority.
