I used to think that the term "woman of colour" was a modern, politically correct, usage until I re-read "Treasure Island" (published 1882). In it, RLS makes 2 references to Long John Silver's wife; in one he refers to her as a Negress, in the other as a "woman of colour".
In both cases, the context makes it clear that the description is not pejorative, but rather is another example of the larger than life character of the old rascal.
(let's be honest, who wouldn't want to go out with him for an evening's carousing round the watering holes of a West Country harbour ?)
