I should know this because I've read the book before several years

ago. I want to read it again but my copy has disappeared during one of our recent house moves.
It's about a B17. which gets shot up and badly damaged on a raid over Germany.

It drops out of formation and heads for home on wing and a prayer only to find itself being shepherded to safety low level by a Me 109.

Over the Channel the Me109 waggles its wings and disappears.

Can anybody remember the title and author please? I seem to remember the pilots of both a/c met up many years post war and became good buddies.

The book referenced therein is "A Higher Call" by Adam Makos.
