It is unclear whether Tesla's Autopilot feature was in use.

Well with one bloke in the back and the other in the passenger seat one would guess they were using the autopilot. Either way, these two must be pretty certain of nominations for the 2021 Darwin Awards.

One minute I’m minding my own business, then there’s a bang and the tyre pressure warning light comes on.

I start moving from lane 3 to 2 to 1 and then see the tyre shooting off into the distance.

Wasn’t until the speed dropped below 30 that I could even feel anything different in the steering. All very odd, but it looks like I travelled about half a mile on three wheels as the alloy was basically undamaged!

Certainly woke me up. A fortunate outcome given the speeds involved.

I tried the tyre repair kit but it was bloody useless - just went everywhere.

Sounds like a good time for me to go into a rant about Continental in general and the SportContact specfically.

I had them on my Jaguar. All four developed bulges in the sidewall. When the first one happened, I replaced it with another of the same type, but then the other three started developing bulges as well. I complained and was told to go to a specialist assessor with the tyres for the company to inspect. I was convinced there was at least a bad batch and, having safety concerns, expected them to perhaps do a recall (and hopefully refund the cost of new tyres!).

Anyway, they came back to me and said they must have been damaged, that I must have hit a pothole or something. I've no idea how I could have managed to hit a pothole with all four tyres and don't recall hitting one. They basically said it was my fault and case closed. Even if I had hit "potholes" with all four tyres, that's normal for tyres and I haven't had any issue with any other make. In fact, I *did* hit a pothole some years later, enough to crack a wheel, but the tyre was undamaged.

I was prepared to believe this was a bad batch and that their tyres weren't all dangerous, but reading this now I feel the need to tell my story, as any of the four tyres which had sidewall bulges could have caused a blowout. It sounds like it happened to you. My issue was quite a few years ago now so it doesn't look like they've learnt their lessons. I believe Continental tyres are dangerous, and the attitude of the company is totally reprehensible given the possibility of injury or loss of life should a tyre blow out.

I will never EVER buy Continental tyres again and given the above issues don't seem to have been fixed and they continue to have issues, would implore everyone else to not buy them.
