The reason for auxiliary battery is that high-voltage battery is switched on and off with 12V relays. If high-voltage battery is not in use it is not connected to vehicle electrically.

The Leaf needs power to the relays that switch the main battery on. Or switch on the charging socket when cable is connected to the vehicle.

With this having to be on board anyway it makes sense to use it to power the 12v accessories.

We've got a trip to Edinburgh planned in August: the train appeals even less than normal at the moment, so we'll be driving from Kent and back. I've been keen to try an EV on a longish journey for a while, and this seems like a good opportunity.

The usual rental companies do look to have them, but there also seem to be quite a few outfits specialising in EVs. Does anyone have any experience with week long Tesla rentals?

Buy one and give it back within the specified miles/time and be done with it?

I think I'd rather just pay the increased damage waiver the rental firms would flog than shell out - albeit temporarily - for a new car :D

Plus, to me it's seems a slightly unfair trick, akin to buying a fancy suit for a wedding and then taking it back the day after. Just doesn't seem right.

I know that to be the truth.

I drove my 911 to the Leaf gig some seven or eight years back prepared for three months of tedium, then discovered that odd, lumpy vehicle was simply a world better than I ever expected

EV is the future of that there isn't the smallest doubt. But if I was tKF now I'd be looking to drive the dinosaurs. Supercharged V8s won't be a feature of his motoring future.

Until someone can sort out a decent solution for EV charging for those who rely solely on on street parking, there’s no way I could even consider one. And I enjoy the 3.2 litre V6 daily drive immensely, though a couple of extra cylinders could be fun. Who knows what the next toy may be.

I've driven a couple but never owned one. I don't feel the need to have a mid-life crisis.

It's the people who have never owned one who are having the mid-life crisis.

That is true. Poor sods.

But you will recall this arose from a tKF post about hiring, not ownership.

Which reminds me I still have V12 and V10 to tick off.

Edit: There was a Ferrari I forgot. And a Diablo. Make that V10.
