When I bought my TomTom all singing and dancing version a coupla years ago I was under the impression that it 'learnt' common routes.

I use it for every route now just for the speed /camera warnings , but even for the 14 mile trip to the airstrip which I've done a thousand times it still wants to take me down the back roads instead of the quicker, but fractionally longer 'main' roads.

Then it gets arsey with me if I ignore the suggestion that I disappear off down a winding single track road with ten foot hedges and 'kin great farm vehicles coming the other way...................

To give it its due, however it got me round Madeira in the mountains/tiny villages far more accurately that the built in SatNav in my rental Peugeot

I am agonising about replacing the o/e infotainment system, dating back to the last century, with an Android fit, but I am not convinced I use the car enough to benefit, and I rarely turn on any 'entertainment' in-car anyway.

I'm wrestling with the same on the monster truck but with only 55k on the clock ('04 reg) I think it's probably worth the five or six hundred it will cost for one of those fancy double DIN units. There's a new flavour of Android starting to wash through which seems to be the one to go for.

Give me a clue?

This is the preferred Jaguar-specific upgrade, but it works out closer to a thousand notes (drop in the ocean of the spend to date)

@Rob P I'm still getting up to speed but the trick is to replace the walled garden PCM and leverage the power of the mobile phone alongside the ICE unit so the phone does the modern heavy lifting on data and the head unit does the car stuff. Presuming that you're on Android the new Android Auto looks pretty seamless https://www.kenwood-electronics.co.uk/android-auto/

The head unit <> phone isn't a problem. The thing I'm still working out is hooking it into the Bose amp / speaker system and the steering wheel controls. There are various connectors out there but I think I might bottle it and leave it to a specialist installer. Pulling apart a leather Porsche dashboard isn't going to be the same as scrawming about in the footwell of my beloved 1.0l Nova back in the day :)
