It always amazes me ... Not the targetted adverts, just that if the Government were as blatant about watching us as huge commercial companies are, there would be enormous fuss and protests.
(Yes, I know they are watching, but they are not blatant about it until the battering ram hits the door)

It's no different from carrying a smartphone with location services enabled, Apple, Samsung and whoever know our every move as no one is worried. If the government issued such a device to everyone can you imagine the reaction, the civil liberties brigade would be going ape!

Only if it was compulsory, a move which Apple & Samsung have yet to make.
With the number of ANPR cameras in service the govt are already tracking our movements but the civil liberties people seem strangely quiet about them...

There is no need to make it compulsory, just use some slick marketing to make people think it's cool and necessary then 90% of the population will sign up like lambs to the slaughter.

@romille Invent something like that which can eavesdrop and they will even put in their homes... make sure they know it is listening all the time so they cannot complain about it, and call it a nice nationality neutral name like Alexa...
