Hi! Sorry that I`ve not been on here for a while it's just that flying planes is soooooooo adictive, anyway, I've decided to start to knuckle down on the exams and again, I'm stumped. I've got an exam question the I can't get my head around. You are in level flight, (Outside controlled Airspace) on a heading of 095, due to wind drift, your magnetic track is 087. The QNH is 994, If you wish to comply with the quadrantal rule, you should fly........ A) Indicated 5000ft with an Alt setting of 1013 B) Indicated 5500ft @ 1013 C)Indicated 3000ft @1013 D) Indicated 2500ft @ 994. The correct answer is A, where does that answer come from,,,, Ian

Old question, which assumes the quadrantal rule still applies (it doesn’t) and the transition level is 3000ft (it rarely is). According to the quadrantal rule magnetic track 087 requires an odd flight level (30 or 50) but as the QNH is below 1013, FL30 is below 3000 so the first available FL is 50.

Forget it and learn the semicircular rule instead!

Thank you for the information and I forgot that the quadrantal rule had been abolished, thank you for the explanation where flight level starts @ 5000ft. I have so much respect for you guys, Ian
