Depends.

If at a non radio airfield, or one where the radio is not always monitored on the ground, knowing which way or which runway an aircraft is landing on can be quite useful

Yeah we do:
GXX Right downwind 01 (or left whichever) touch and go/full stop
GXX On final for 01 touch and go/full stop

If the circuit is busy I was told to add another call in when on base for visibility

I learned, back in the dark ages

"Downwind One Eight, left hand, Touch and go" (or full stop ")

Followed by" Final"

No runway number attached to the latter as you had already identified the runway with your downwind call.

This at a FISO field.
