Hi all

So I’m moving onto my navigation section of learning and I need some bits n bobs but I’m not sure exactly what some of these are and wondered if you could help me understand exactly what I need:

-Vol3 book, got this
-Norther and southern charts, but what size?
-vfr flight guide, I think I have this, isn’t this the pooleys flight guide with all the airport plates in?
- long rule, which one pooleys has loads
-protractor, same as above
-plotter, sane as above
-flight computer, is there a cheaper option to the £60 pooleys on or do I need that one, I see this as mostly pointless after I get my license as I’ll be using sky demon am I wrong?

All help welcome :)

In the 1:500,000 series there are 3 charts. There's the Northern England and Northern Ireland, Southern England and Wales and the third one is Scotland. By word association, I think you need the first 2.

The VFR Flight Rule has to include a scale of 1:500,000 to work with your chart but may have 1:250,000 etched on it which may be useful if you get a smaller scale chart at some point. I notice they come in different lengths but have no view on that.

The protractor is a simple choice between the two standard types. I'm unable to comment on plotters due to no experience.

Personally I would go for the plotter only as it does the same job as a ruler and protractor but easier, especially when planning in flight diversions.

I don't have this one but have one similar:
https://www.pooleys.com/shop/jeppesen/pj-1-rotating-azimuth-plotter-10009524/?from=search

I use the 1:500,000 CAA UK Charts, they also publish 1:250,000 charts but I find these too big myself, prefer the "standard" 1:500,000. Ensure your ruler/plotter has a 1:500,000 nm scale on it (most come with both scales).

CRP-1 is good for the PPL, it is smaller and doesn't have as many features as a CRP-5 such as Compression Correction but you won't need this for the PPL (required for 300+ Kts). However, the CRP-1 is about £40 but I'm sure you can get it cheaper on eBay. If you are thinking about going for a CPL/ATPL after your PPL you might as well got straight for the CRP-5 as you will need one (or similar) for the exams.

If you are flying into and out of licenced airfields you may get by with using the official NATS AIP available online:
http://www.nats-uk.ead-it.com/public/index.php.html

Airfield charts (you can print them):
http://www.nats-uk.ead-it.com/public/index.php%3Foption=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=6&Itemid=13.html

I did this during my PPL but it was the 20 years ago, not online and had to photocopy the pages from the physical volume of an AIP at the flying school. Once I passed I just went and bought a Pooleys Flight Guide which gave me airfield charts for all airfields, even those unlicensed as I was then able to fly to those. It is different not as you can fly in and out of unlicensed airfields whilst training for your PPL.

All the best for Navigation, it's a great feeling being able to plan a flight, fly the aircraft to the plan and end up where you want to be. :)

For the flight computer, the word you're searching for in google is "E6B".

You can get a "student" one, made of cardboard, for about £16.

However, I'd suggest going for an aluminium one so you can keep it for posterity and hand it down to your grandchildren.

Or get an already vintage one from e-bay.
