I am new to the forum having only recently joined but have been reading people's posts for some time now. I hope to start my Lapl training in the new year once I have a few things sorted out, having only recently moved to Helmsley North Yorkshire. I hope to check out the clubs locally in the new year and see how I get on with a few test flights. My question relates to my medical history and if it will stop me passing my medical. I appreciate that ultimately I will need to speak to an AME, but thought I would see what information I can find out first. I am 62 and am on medication for high blood pressure and high cholesterol, the main issue is that in 2017 I was diagnosed with bowel cancer, had the operation and then chemotherapy. The steroids gave me diabetes and I was on insulin for a few months them metformin, In may 2018 I was given the all clear with the Diabetes and ceased as no longer diabetic. I was given the all clear for the cancer in January 2018 and will soon be having my year 1 scan, hopefully all clear. How will my history complicate or stop me passing the medical. Any advice would be most appreciated also Any AME recommendation would be helpful.
Thanking all in advance

Meldrew,

Welcome to the forum.

Your medical history means a bit of extra work may be involved but it is probably not going to be a show stopper in relation to getting a LAPL medical.

Whereabouts in the country are you?

Hi Meldrew:

I had similar fears before I embarked on the course. Previous record of heart condition, BP and Type 2 diabetes. All well controlled thankfully. Had a good AME who asked me to do a proper review with a a heart specialist. Did this (including a treadmill ECG and BP test) and although I had to pay it was useful - I changed one of the meds a a result. The active test is similar to the requirement for HGV drivers.
Just as I was about to get the OK I ended up in hospital with pancreatitis!!!! This delayed the approval but was checked all OK 6 months later. Now half way through the course. So - stick with it! The overriding principle is a very stable medical condition. LAPL is less stringent than PPL because of the limitations.

Go for it
