Note! I'm not a qualified pilot. had time or money, but never the two together, where I could justify indulging myself......so, GO FOR IT
Any time spent in the air should be fun, or a learning experience. There is at least one 3-axis machine, where, if it's got an additional electric fuel-pump...It's a "proper" PPL aeroplane.....no 'Leccy pump? It's a Microlight!
Another case of crazy rules:- Factory- built, it has to be on a C of A with all the hassle (and cost) of Certified parts and professional maintenance.
Build the same aircraft from a kit, it's flown on a Permit (LAA) maintenance can be DIY, parts a lot cheaper!
Why not buy a logbook and have a few trial lessons? Group "A" (the dear Cof A ones)...PPL....... Fixed-wing Microlight (high-wing, low wing) even a flexwing? They're not as slow as they look, nor as draughty and exposed. If you want really cheap, old ones can be had, remove rear seat belt and it's "single-seat de-regulated" NO annual inspection, simply fly what you feel safe in! Then there's , IIRC the nanolight category. Powered hang-gliders are now allowed wheels and clever people have made trikes that fulfil the requirements....buy and fly! (but!- learn Air-law first, otherwise you could make a very expensive mistake) Yes! really! no exams, tests, medicals or licencing. (You'd be a mug to try with no training,)- but hey! the Wright Brothers didn't do so bad , going that route.
Ask each instructor what your options are, licence -wise, You can compare answers and find which ones are after business (your cash!) and which are real enthusiasts and really want to help you get what's best for YOU.
I said "get a logbook first"... ALL lessons count, even trial ones. If you're a born -natural, If you're good at self-study, You may just complete the course in less than minimum hours...in which case , those "trial -lessons" will help and save you cash!
Finally, look and read ...BMAA website, LAA website....You've found the best GA forum! there's also a good, but not very active Microlight Forum.
Sometimes wish I was young again and knew then, what I know now
EDIT..Gasco safety-evenings are free, or nominal charge, no pack-drill,( they let me in
) Got a Free "Skyway Code" (normally about £15)
and some other goodies. A really interesting evening (website and look on the Forums for one near you.)
