There are certainly flights of 5 hours or more, but I dare say they have been by pilots who have been doing this for a while and not 'just' as the "cheapest way to maintain a license".
Seriously, gliding is an obsession and can become a lifestyle. I hope you do get to the level where going up for 'a few hours' would be an easy choice

Of course I’ve this “youthful exuberance”! I’ve never flown a glider! But yes I understand what you mean! Hopefully I’ll build up the experience though that I can justify that statement.
