And as well as other things mentioned, when you are flying around "normally", experiment to find what rpm gives you a descent of about 400fpm at about ten knots above your normal approach speed (you have to get the descent stable) and then do not waste any descent, get yourself used to that. You will find you adapt much quicker to instrument approaches if you are accustomed to stable trimmed 400fpm descents. It isn't that every approach will be 400fpm but it will be tweakable easily from that rate.
