I absolutely understand that while there is a syllabus to be taught, and examined upon, it's important to equip students with appropriate techniques.

What I like about the above method is it moves the problem away from maths in the cockpit to reinforcing how the CDI actually functions (which in my experience a surprising number of people with IMC ratings seem to not grasp).

You cannot illustrate the technique better than to head towards Compton vor on say the 010 qdm in real cloud and before getting there without warning ask the student to turn and establish on the 225 radial outbound. Mental capacity for calculations can be exceeded and you are not sure what the student will do, use the obs method, no problem, no real mental work, student gets a good heading and turns left despite the needle going right when 225 set
