Reading this months Flyer Accident Reports about instrument failures. Our aging Cessna has vacuum DI and AH, the vacuum pump is the Achilles heel in the system. The thought of loosing both instruments whilst flying in IMC even having practiced partial panels is quite daunting!
It would be reassuring to fit a non certified standby electronic HSI which can be purchased for around £850 these days.
What is the legality of fitting a non certified duplicate instrument to a group A aircraft?

If by HSI you imply an AH (or EFIS) for ~£850 installed in a Gp 'A' a/c, that's what I have & I did early this year.

A simple 12 volt feed plus a switch and fuse. Cross couple the pitot and static lines with someTee pieces & lastly plug in the supplied GPS aerial.

My unit fits into a a standard 4" panel hole which was where an old VSI used to be.
