long-term, integrated, solid state is the way to go, battery wire and warning lamp wire, job done. but there is something to be said for the repairability of the simple, discrete-component setup, as described for the Nanchang.

The disadvantage, of course, is the rat's nest of extra wires and the exposure of all those components and solder-joints to atmosphere and vibration.

Lucas ACR series invariably blew the rectifier....one phase down, about 11 volts output.
If the reg. died, it usually lost field -current, so no output at all.

The Bosch unit invariably failed full- field, so, depending on engine-revs, could poke out 50+ volts :shock: boiling the battery dry, blowing all the light-bulbs and smothering the engine-bay with dried acid. the plus-side was the self-contained brush-box and regulator was held on the back with 2 screws..could change some in-situ. :)
