Just to update everyone, Elvington is very much open for business and the occasional "issues" of non-answered phones etc have disappeared since the arrival of a new Airfield Operations Manager, the ever-helpful Mick, a couple of weeks ago.

We went there over Easter, very convenient for York City Centre (approx 15 mins in a taxi). Landing fee is £12, (which works out at about £4 per 1000 metres of runway) and includes free entry to Yorkshire Air Museum.

It is strictly PPR as they have many other events on at the airfield, however, this is unlikely to cause a problem (see below).

The procedure for booking-in is to call Mick on the airfield mobile number: 07971 299385 with your planned arrival time, he will let you know if this is likely to conflict with anything, but if it does, he may well be able to arrange a "gap" in the activities to allow you to land. The only tip there is to ensure you do plan your arrival time reasonably accurately to give him a fighting chance.

The same goes for departures (Mick rushed around in his van stopping the land-yachts and aero-modellers whilst we prepared for departure) and we were extremely impressed with the "we want you to come here so we'll do everything we can to make it easy" approach.

It's A/G only (York Radio 119.625) and lies within the Church Fenton MATZ stub. An overhead join whilst switching from Church Fenton to York seems to work well, and then a good runway inspection whilst descending just to make sure that it really is clear,(NB: The windsock is at the Eastern end of the runway, not as shown on some flight guides). There is a starter-extension section of runway which is slightly bumpy but fine if you're careful, but if you go for the numbers on the nice smooth black tarmac bit you'll probably have a long taxy.

Mick will direct you to parking, and pick you up in his van (they'd charge you £70 at Liverpool for that...) to take you to the office, where he will call you a taxi etc as needed.

I have to say, all very simple and easy, Mick couldn't be more helpful and Elvington is highly recommended if you fancy visiting York (which is also highly recommended)
