The airfield is located just east of Berlin. The S-Bahn (local train) station is ten minutes walk and it takes you to Berlin in about an hour. The runway is concrete and there is also a grass strip for gliders. It is relatively easy to find from the air, but make sure you don't overfly the villages.

Strausberg is convenient enough for a short fuel stop, but the reception and service we received was sensational. Without being asked, they arranged rooms in a building for visiting tourists and, I suspect, students. We were eight people, and they only had three double rooms so they called around and found a double at an inn a few miles away. The two people staying there were given a free ride and later reported it was very nice. The rooms at the airfield were nice, clean and cheap.

I have been flying in the former East Germany only once before, and the service then was horrible. But this was among the best receptions I have ever got.

We've just visited EDAY again, in fact twice in one week: first for an overnight stop (staying in Berlin proper) and then again on the way back north for lunch and weather updates on a blustery day with many TEMPO groups in the TAFs. I can't speak highly enough of the place: service with a smile and reasonable prices. When going to Berlin by the S-bahn (local train) we got a lift to the train station at no charge, and they even sold us train tickets: no hassle at the ticket machine and they simply put the ticket cost on the landing fee. Credit cards are accepted, which is not the case in all of the former GDR.

Went to Strausberg EDAY last week with Awful Charlie in his lovely Mooney.

Arrived from the south west staying below 2500ft of the Berlin TMA. There is a low level VFR route East-West across the combined Tegal/Schonefld Berlin CTR, which comes out directly opposite Strausberg, but we elected to skirt around the south-west corner of the combined zone. Approaching Strausberg they like you to avoid a few noise sensitive areas, with the 850ft (1100ft amsl) circuit to the south of the aerodrome. They have long parrallel 1200m hard & grass runways and having parked up and headed to the reception below the tower, the first thing we were asked was if we needed a free lift to the S-bhan station, but we were being met anyway so declined. It turns out to be only a 10-12minute walk anyway.

We stayed 4 days, and once you have travelled into Berlin (Strausberg is not in the city zone) the best way to get about is with a "day-card" which costs 6.50Euro and is valid on any public transport for a whole day within the city area - train/tram/bus/underground everything.

Total cost for the Mooney was under 50 Euros for the 4 day stay, broken down into:
Landing fee: 18.50 Euros.
Parking 4 days = 30Euros = 7.50 Euros/day.

They have Avgas @ 2.60Euro/ltr and they have hngarage available for visitors, but we didnt take either. There is also an Avis hire care office in the same reception area with a couple of coffee/drink/snack machines. However we did see there is a bar/restraunt outside the tower area overlooking the airfield, though we didnt go there ourselves it was open and had customers.

So, if you want to visit Berlin, this is the best GA airfield for it.

Regards, SD..

We stopped at EDAY for fuel and lunch on our way home to Sweden from Prague on Friday 17 July. The food is cheap and quite ok. The daily special cost less than 5 EUR, but a glass of soda costs almost as much... There is a restaurant at the S-Bahn station, too.
