Was in there on Saturday 10-Apr-10 in a PA28.

Called up about 3 days before to book a parking spot (effectively PPR) Ops very friendly and answered all questions.

Inbound, spoke to Solent who gave me the necessary information and cleared me into the zone not above 2000 on a base join for 02.

No grass parking, so you'll be directed to the parking spots near the Tower/Ops office.

Ops collect you from aircraft and drive you over to the UK arrivals gate to get into the Terminal (Interesting question from the girl behind the desk in the Terminal 'What flight number did you arive on?)

On returning to collect the aircraft, you need to head to 'Gate 11' which is through the multi-storey carpark next to the Tower. A quick security check (the usual machine, but as only you using it, very quick) then into Ops to pay charges.

A lift back to the aircraft, call prior to start up and away you go.

Very friendly bunch, would have no problems using them again.

Charges (all exc Vat) Landing 24.45
Parking (5 hours) 12.20

All the charges are in the last few pages of this

Seems as though it's £6.10 per ton, per 24 hours. First 2 hours are free, charges kick in after that.

Went here on Sat. Not much to add, really helpful and very friendly. Don't see the point of the security check but it takes two minutes and done with a big smile so who cares.

We went to Mitchell's bar and grill in the terminel. It's very good food. I'd possibly change the description on the website from "An eclectic brassierie that wouldn't look out of place in the West End" to "It's a bit like a Wetherspoons". Oh and they stop serving the all day breakfast at 11.30! It's very good though. £28 for those facilities or £25 for Blackbushe is a no brainer.

Sadly, they have become part of the compulsory handling brigade. I would like to visit Southampton and have had this quote from them (so I cannot fault their customer service department in responding to my enquiry):

"The charges for a PA28 (MTOW 1107KG) Would be as follows

Landing fee GBP 35.06 (Including VAT)
Parking fee GBP 15.98 (Including VAT)
Ground handling fee GBP 30.00 (Including VAT)

The handling charge is unfortunately not optional and currently we are unable to accept any GA our selves until the 11/09/12 due to the Olympics."

I have thanked them for their response and said that the compulsory handling makes it unacceptable to me.

PS when I have flown around and through their class D, the controllers have been very friendly and helpful.

Actually, that would be comparatively reasonable. In the past, if you stayed overnight, they would charge well over 100 pounds due to very expensive handling. Not that 80 quid were little, but still...

ATC at Southampton is provided under a contract with NATS, they're no longer employed directly by the airport thus they have nothing to do with the airport ops/handling system.

The above response refers to the Olympics which have long past. Do they still require mandatory handling? Their website implies not (unless you stay overnight.

All pilots are reminded that Southampton Airport Airside Operations only provide a basic ground handling service. There may be a wait to be escorted to and from your aircraft due to other airfield commitments. If you require a full ground handling service please contact Signature Flight Support on +44 (0) 2380 616600.

Overnight stops are not accepted through Southampton Airside Operations, if an overnight stop is required you will need to contact Signature Flight Support.

Can't see anything on their site related to charges.

Don't think so. Last I heard, the landing fee was about 20 quid and that was it.

Enjoyed our visit into this busy commercial airport
No mandatory handling unless overnight
PPR required by email 2 days ahead or phone on the day
No training approaches but we got a vectored ILS on request on arrival
Ops drive you from parking spot to the vehicle gate, 3 mins walk to terminal and railway station.
On return, Ops collect you by car at the gate and ferry you to your aircraft. Payment by card accepted in the vehicle. Very friendly and helpful team all round.

Was any handling fee applied? that sounds just too good! I landed at Bournemouth a few weeks ago, total bill was £75 and seeing this I'm wondering if I really did make the wrong choice.

Copied from this thread [26 June 2018].
Maxthelion wrote:I called the handling agent who said their mandatory handling was £120+ but the kind lady put me onto Southampton Ops who said I could land for £22.56 (which is fine considering it's a proper full on airport and all), but mandatory handling would be £35.86, which is a little too rich for me, and the extra hour I need over the two hours free parking would add £9.24. Hopefully this information is useful to anyone else considering visiting Southampton.
