What's the purpose of the circular thingy in front of the microphone?

ISTR something similar was used a lot in many Beatles recordings.

Flob stopper? Breathing noise stopper? To alter tone?

TIA

Aha that makes sense: Is it solid or perforated?

I guess it acts in a similar but slightly more subtle way to the rabbit fur covers on outside broadcast microphone which ISTR cuts out wind noise.

Perforated. Before such things were commercially available a pair of tights stretched over a modified coathanger was industry standard. You dont want people spitting into a £1000 condenser microphone !
