I have never been a huge fan of either John Dankworth or Cleo Laine, who is now his widow, but they are undoubtedly influential postwar jazzpeople, and the jazz world is the poorer for his loss.

Went to see him and Cleo (it was just before her 80th birthday) at the Gordon Craig in Stevenage about 4 years ago.

These two old people came on stage (Johnny did the 1st half) and as the music played and she sang, they transformed themselves into two young vibrantly talented individuals who entertained us for the evening.

We have all go to go I guess and Johnny had a spectacular innings. I hope Cleo can continue, it must be impossibly sad for her right now after so long with her man. Don't know how I would cope if I lost Pat.

Jim, I think that is one of the best descriptions of the transformative powers of good art that I have seen in a while. Thanks for the thought!
