The search function forces you to use longer words than 4 characters and this has several times made it very difficult to search for something.

Today, looking at the recent woes of the e-go aircraft, I wanted to search for past posts on that - there has been some discussions on the viability of the design/project in th past.

Now, if I search for e-go it seems to ignore the hyphen and insist on interpreting it is a search for e and go which fails due to the 4 character rule. If I try to search for "e-go" it doesn't find anything - presumably because it includes the quote marks as the search?

Of course, ego would give lots of false hits (not that I'm saying that there are too many egos on the forum, but... ) but is too short and of course e-go aircraft merely ignores e-go and gives useless results.
I had a bit of fun with e-go canard (posts about restaurants and French cuisine), e-go Cambridge Composite (posts about the Firefly?!) and e-go start-up viability (posts about airfields going under).

So, how I am supposed to search for past threads on the e-go?

I understand the need to not search for words like 'the', 'and' etc., but we should be able to search for an exact phrase in quotation marks ("e-go") and it should also allow us to use hyphens, periods or other punctuation marks without getting confused.

Alternatively, instead of a hamfisted 4 character rule, just ignore the x most commonly used words (which would be unlikely to include "e-go" although they may include "ego") :pirat:

Hilarious!
So Google search is more user friendly than the site's own...

Cheers :thumleft:

Why reinvent the wheel, especially as you are not going to be able to do it as well as google did?

What would be nice is if the site used the google custom search API to provide a google search of the site from a search form on the site.

You may want to think about rewording that.

(I agree with Morten, BTW, most frustrating).

I have recently come across this as a problem because of the multitude of TLAs in aviation.
It does make searches for some things difficult, can it be changed?

Thanks, SD..

I've also seen a big gap in the search over the past few weeks...it will search something very new, but then there seems to be a gap back to about 2014 and all searched items come before that. There seems to be a big chunk of time between 2014 and 2016 which doesn't appear...unless I'm doing something wrong.

I just did a search for a common term - "google" :D

The first hit I get in 2016 is:

Q codes and what they mean.

The one prior to that is:

Jodel D9 1/4 share at Hinton £2000

I don't get the objection to using google.

Type the following in the search box. Results include stuff form 2015.

site:forums.flyer.co.uk "tla"

Here you go, a custom search box that only searches flyer and where you choose to list results by relevance of date (change the sort by drop down top right.

Sorry but I can't do anything about the ads unless you want to pay to use it.
