If in doubt RTFM :D
External mike option in the menu controls "assignment of microphone controlled with the PTT switch", so (afaic) it is not going to change how the microphone performs (and my PTT works fine), nevertheless I shall test it.

I don't need side tone (at least afaik), because I am not using headset - don't particularly want to hear myself on the speaker.

I know PTT and phantom supply, my question about voltages was to do with pre-amplified mike wanting 9-28 volt (see: http://www.pilot-usa.com/headset-access ... pa-7x.html) and me measuring only 5 volts.

Appreciate you all guys, trying to help me :thumright:
thank you

Ah, I mentioned this in a thread a long time ago in a galaxy far far away.

Worth a punt.

flyingeeza wrote:That is indeed how a condenser (capacitor, electret, etc) mic works. When you PTT, the mic circuitry supplies a preset dc voltage (phantom supply) to power the little amplifier (FET) inside the mic capsule.

Or to supply the power for the amplifier in an amplified dynamic mic.

I have no idea if 5V is suitable for the chosen microphone though!

I like the way the Wikipedia article quotes:

The oozlum bird is sometimes used as a symbol of self-reference and circular argumentation. For example, author Charles Seife wrote: "Like the mythical oozlum bird, Wikipedia seems to have the ability to fly around in ever decreasing circles until it flies right up its own rectum."

Though it does supply a citation which isn't Wikipedia...

An update:

1) it's nothing to do with external/internal mike option in the setting menu (as suggested before, it selects which mike is controlled by PTT switch on the side of the radio).
I am using external PTT so it matters even less.

2)it's all to do with the choice of mike - all those I've tried (whether electret or dynamic) were not amplified and that's why I had the problem.
I tested it with this one:
http://www.pilot-europe.com/microphones ... rs/pa7-mic
and all is working fine :thumleft: :thumleft:
Simples (if you know  )
