Could the problem be the Garmin End of Week Rollover problem? I had this with my Pilot III - it would just sit there, staring at the sky without finding anything, after years of faultless service . Much googling revealed an issue to do with the rollover of a counter in a lot of Garmin devices including the Pilot III and the 38. The 55 may be affected too.

In the middle of this thread is a link:

pointing to

Maybe it will help.

Well Thank you Matthew,

Encouraged by my reading what you referred me to and yet full knowing it's an obsolete device I was brave enough to leave it out all afternoon today. For a couple of hours it refused to work or 'see' satellites, so I tried switching off, then on again with random other buttons (because the buttons have different labels to those in the article !).

Left it a couple of hours more after that and when I picked it up to go home it has found itself the location and a quick test to EGKK gave the approx. correct range and direction.

Regards, a happy mike.
