I might need to go back a stage.... what do the Zaon devices pick up? (And off at a tangent what do the flight tracking websites like Flightradar24 pick up?)

Zaon XRX picks up transponder returns and calculates a 3D position in space using a funky antenna array and some clever software. So it's immediately useful and usable.

The problem with ADS-B in the UK is that almost no light GA aircraft broadcast position information, and we also do not have any kind of TIS.

The MX1090 might just help you dodge an airliner, but nothing much else...

But the XRX alone cannot be easily connected to an iPad.

To connect the XRX to an iPad you need to convert the serial output into either bluetooth or wifi as the iPad doesn't have a serial port.
To do this you need to use a bluetooth or wifi module (such as http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/a ... etooth.php ) or MR1090 or MX1090 (which also picks up ADS-B data).

There are websites (http://www.pilotmall.com/product/Zaon-M ... ffic-alert http://chris.axlines.org/stuff/bt-232b- ... -zaon-xrx/) that suggests that any serial to bluetooth connector can be programmed to output the signal so you don't have to use the Zaon one with its inflated prices...
