The Hamble Cherokee's were modded following a circuit collision in Feb 1970.
G-AVNV hit the tail of G-AVNS. Both crews escaped unscathed. NS is still in the UK and flying but NV was sold to a US buyer in 1984.
There was another mid air at the field in 1981.

I'm not sure the window served much purpose as you'd have to swivel your head 180 to use it.

I'm sure any boat chandler with have the required plastic for the window and your engineer should be able to replace it .

Found them very useful --without having to move head much.Certainly an extra safety factor.We have 4 windows in ours--not apparent in your photos.You just have to look upwards.
Still quite a few 180 "s flying-- being capable of both short field and touring use.
There is a list somewhere on google of surviving ex hamble 180 "s. A few seem to have crunched.

I flew from Hamble 1975-77 as a member of Southampton UAS flying Bulldogs so clearly recall the roof window Cherokees. Lovely airfield right next to the River Hamble and its wonderful pubs!
It was indeed a very busy airfield requiring a good lookout at all times. Very busy circuit traffic. The airfield was just a huge meadow of well manicured grass. Dayglo cones and "cheese wedge" markers were set up to form the runways dependent upon prevailing wind direction.

There was a take off runway and a landing runway marked out with a "sterile" area in between of about 30 yards width. I suppose it gave the budding BA pilots a taste of Heathrow! It had an ATC service which gave mandatory instructions ie no pilot discretion for take off and landing.

Most of us did GH flying over the IOW and we had to route via corridors out and in across Calshot Spit (or Calshit Spot as I once said in a morning ops briefing.) Southampton Airport I recall was not really busy at all, just a few Islanders and Tri-Landers back and forth.

The UAS had a drinking song which was sung to the Monty Python theme tune having a gentle dig at those earnest young men in their blue blazers, white shirts and ties!

Sad to see the airfield now as acres of wild grassland. The UAS hangar and portakabins are still there however, now occupied by a truck repair company.

I learnt to fly fxed wing in a C152 Aerobat that had two roof lights. Very useful for an overhead check.


The accident involving G-AVNV and G-AVNS was not fatal. It occurred over the Isle of Wight when the prop of NV sliced through NS's rudder.

I'm not sure which prompted the mod with the roof windows.

The Hamble mod is the only one I have encountered anywhere in the world.

Piper must have signed it off with the CAA?

G-AVNO is now based at Sarfend--photos on G-INFO.
G-AVNP beleive crashed at Nayland---write off.

Maybe a reunion some time in the summer would be interesting. Always getting ex BA guys looking at ours-telling me they flew it.

Where did they fit the front RHS window?

Must have been asymmetrically placed to avoid door and latching stuff.

Can't see it in photo: did they just fit three roof windows?

Seem to remember we had one in Bristol Lulsgate in the late 90's for a period - for some reason G-DLTR comes to mind, which used to be G-AYAV, so quite possible
